This is beginning to look like the trade that would never end.

In addition to disposing of Coco Crisp and acquiring top third-base prospect Andy Marte from the Boston Red Sox on Friday night, the Indians shipped Arthur Rhodes to the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for outfielder Jason Michaels.

That might not be the extent of Indians' General Manager Mark Shapiro's machinations. Cincinnati Reds interim General Manager Brad Kullman confirmed that Shapiro is proposing a deal that would bring power-hitting outfielder Austin Kearns to Cleveland and send right-handed starter Jake Westbrook to the Reds.

This precise swap reportedly was turned down last week by then-Cincinnati GM Dan O'Brien, before he was fired by new owner Bob Castellini. With a new man in the Reds front office, the attitude has changed. []

Looking to add depth to their restructured bullpen without guaranteeing salary, the Cardinals accomplished both goals Monday by signing veteran reliever Jeff Nelson to a minor league contract that will pay him an $800,000 base salary should he pitch his way onto the club this spring. what tino does when there's no baseball

(thanks juneh)

and from a Nov. page six:
TINO Martinez, who just found out that his multimillion-dollar contract won't be renewed by the Yankees, is seemingly taking the news in stride. Martinez was in fine spirits earlier this week while chatting with photog Patrick McMullan during a Jhane Barnes Menswear shoot at painter Ross Bleckner's Chelsea studio, and let drop he plans to move into a management position for the Bronx Bombers. The nightlife shutterbug, who's apparently not much of a baseball fan, asked the married Martinez, "Are you a pitcher or a catcher?" prompting nervous laughter from the ballplayer, who informed McMullan that he played first base.
