kevin whelan and the tampa yankees pitch a something something

7.19.2007
[kevin] Whelan (2-0) went five innings in the Yankees' combined no-hitter Wednesday, striking out four and walking one in the 3-0 shutout at Legends Field.

The 23-year-old right-hander, who was able to use his fastball and slider for strikes, lowered his ERA to 1.73 in his sixth start for Tampa.

Whelan was a reliever for the past two seasons before beginning this year with Double-A Trenton, where he was 3-0 with four saves and a 2.90 ERA in 18 appearances. He made his first Minor League start June 12, giving up four runs on four hits in two frames, but has yielded just one run on six hits over his last 24 innings. [milb]

i'll be there friday night, and i probably won't blog about it. i predict rain, as is mother nature's cruel wont whenever i go to waterfront for a hughes start. or at least it feels that way.

from joel sherman's blog last friday:

Count me as someone who is taking a break from the Phil Hughes hype train. I have seen all the numbers and I have heard all the glowing reports, but you know what I haven’t seen yet: Phil Hughes pitch well.

Not in spring training this year and not on Thursday night in his major league debut against the Blue Jays. He is just 20 and this was his first game, so I recognize we are far, far away from any kind of ultimate judgment on if Hughes is special or not. But, please, watching the YES broadcast on Thursday made me feel like I was at one of those Little League ceremonies where every kid gets a trophy. Short of Hughes falling on the mound and begging for his mommy, it seemed that YES had preordained that Hughes was going to have a positive game regardless of the result, kind of like all of those Monday Night Football games when Brett Favre is the pre-programmed hero right through his fourth interception.

the rest is even cuter! oddly, he doesn't seem to have addressed the issue again. gosh, i wonder why.

just glanced quickly through my pictures from last night and am a little disappointed at the amount that didn't come out at all. still, if this had been the only one i'd have been happy:

On a cool spring night in the Bronx, with the Yankees spinning through a worrisome crisis, a young man bowed his head, curled his long legs into a crouch and uttered a silent request behind the Stadium mound. [lisa olson]

phillyburbs on phil hughes' latest start:

It almost doesn't seem fair to keep throwing Trenton Thunder starting pitcher Phil Hughes against Double A hitters.

Hughes, the New York Yankees' top prospect and one of the top young pitchers in baseball, clearly mastered this level weeks ago.

In the Thunder's 2-1 10-inning loss to the visiting Portland Sea Dogs in front of 7,920 fans at Mercer County Waterfront Park on Friday night, Hughes gave up two hits and one run in five routinely dominant innings.

...Hughes gave up a one-out line-drive double to Port-land's Jeremy West in the top of the fourth, and a soft RBI single up the middle to the next hitter, Luis Jim-enez. He has limited opponents to two hits in five straight starts and has only allowed three runs during that span.

For the season, Hughes is 8-3 with a 2.46 ERA. In 106 innings for the Thunder, he has given up 71 hits and struck out 124. Over 24 innings in his last five starts, Hughes has a 1.13 ERA with 34 strikeouts and 10 hits allowed.

On Friday night, he also fielded his position flawlessly, making three plays on balls near the mound.

“That's one of the things about Phil Hughes that people don't understand,” Masse said. “He fields his position very well. You don't always see it because he strikes out half the guys he faces.”

sort of unnerving to look at his line and sniff at his paltry 3 strikeouts though, isn't it? note to self: easy, girl.

oh yeah?

7.29.2006
Kevin Hill says he has been coming to Trenton Thunder home games since he was 4.

Now 16, the Hamilton Square, N.J., resident sees about 20 to 25 games of the New York Yankees' double-A affiliate each season.

Hill said he was on a mission at Waterfront Park last night as the Thunder played the Akron Aeros.

Donning a Phillies cap and a matching red Ryan Howard jersey, Hill came with a message for Trenton pitcher Philip Hughes, the top prospect in the Yankees' farm system. The two talked before the game.

"I hope he gets traded to the Phillies," said Hill, seated next to the Thunder dugout before the game. "I even told him, 'I'll give you a dollar on top of the money the Phillies will give you.' He just smiled and said, 'That might happen.' " [philly inquirer]

i'll give him 2 sacagawea dollars and a killer blowjob to stay*. now what?

*if he had a choice. which he doesn't. but if he did........ yep.

i know i've been a bad blogger lately, and continuing along in that lazy vein, i thought i'd share some already old pictures from phil hughes' trenton debut. other people have commented on the outing far better than i, so don't expect any analysis from me; just some shaky camera work.
