  • i merely speak ze truth

are a you tom robbins fan? recently read his "fierce invalids home from hot climates." annoyingly overblown, but entertaining... its main theme, summed up by the lone phrase that one of its main characters, a parrot, knows how to say, has been haunting me: "People of zee wurl, relax."

anyway, if you have read his stuff, i'm very curious what you think of him.

  • the only tom robbins i've ever picked up was still life with woodpecker. i only got through maaaybe half of the first chapter? i remember feeling it was in love with itself a little too much, that it was cloying. there were charming details, but it was hard to get past, as you said, the annoyingly overblown thing. i was sad cause i really wanted to like it; normally i'm all over anything with even a teensy whiff of magical realism. this was years ago though. maybe i should try again?

  • i knew it!!!! yes, i was on the fence and even threw it out at one point out of irritation. i kept thinking his motto must be, "why say something just once and pithily, when I can say it 80 times in a row and pithily, and in a way to maximally flaunt my vocabulary?" and it seems his primary aim may be to entertain but a very close second is to heimlich the reader into saying "OMG TOM ROBBINS, YOU'RE SOOO SMURT"... all the showing off really makes it drag, which is crazy, because the plot is really quite hilarious and WOULD theoretically clip along at an enjoyable rate. but i have to say, "invalids" was surprisingly touching and has really stayed with me :/ so ended up being worth it.

  • i'll give that one a shot then. i can only reread my old standbys so often and i've been replacing them with too much fluff anyway.
