high and tight mike: So I'll be at Comic Con all weekend, starting in about 10 minutes. Well Friday and Saturday at least... Who wants to bet I'm the only one who asks Michael Shur a baseball question? [which is great on its own, but then here comes] june has decided (who, sometimes, in her own cryptic fashion, is like knowing a living breathing version of the kevin bacon game): tell him i'm sorry and abjectly prostrate myself before him and to please have mercy. he'll know what it means
to one of my favorite beisbol partners in crime and one of my favorite human beings in the history of ever period, juneh! in her honor, a kitteh gone wild video (because really, i don't think there are any existing pix of scott rolen that she hasn't seen 8475346807 times already):
There's a great little story about Roger Clemens and Joba Chamberlain courtesy of the Omaha World-Herald (hat tip: Baseball Prospectus). Chamberlain joined Clemens at the Texas-Nebraska game over the weekend. Joba spent the weekend with Clemens, and stood with the Rocket on the Texas side of the field before moving over to his preferred Nebraska sideline.
Clemens is quoted: "We had this date circled on the calendar. Joba came down yesterday. We've a good time. He's probably going to drag me to Lincoln next year, so that'll be fun." The World-Herald points out that Texas doesn't go to Lincoln until 2010, but we're not about to argue with the Rocket.
"imitation of juneh," or, "in which i react, schoolgirlish, to a fjm excerpt"

And let's take a step back. Again, we're all sad. Torre is leaving. Stand-up guy. Might be a bad decision for the club. But we're talking about a situation where you're feeling misty-eyed for a guy who's turning down a five million dollar base salary because it is a fucking insult to him. Five million dollars. And he's not hitting 97-mph Josh Beckett fastballs or spearing Curtis Granderson laser beams. He's not doing something that only a select few hundred human beings have the physical and mental capacity to do. He's choosing what order to write down names in a lineup (sometimes poorly). He's deciding when to put a relief pitcher in a game (often incorrectly).
actually, i don't have time to write a proper swooning response right now so i'll instead rely on google image search to express my crushitude:
i don't know what's going on there. i think the heart's being impaled by one of those things you light on fire to keep bugs away. i probably could have written something by now. or at least made a blingee. oh well.
The Yankee third baseman went 0-for-4 last night, making him 3-for-29 in his last eight games.
Can I just say something about Alex Rodriguez? And thank you, Brian Costello, for bringing this up, because I have been wanting to say this for a while: Alex Rodriguez is a total dick. I'm serious. What other player in baseball would have the gall to go 3 for 29 over an eight game stretch? That is selfish. Do you guys know how much money he makes? I just looked this up. He makes eleventy corbillion dollars a year. For that kind of money, you best not go 3 for 29 over an 8 game stretch. That is selfish and chokey. That is choke-ball. For eleventy corbillion dollars, you better go more like 15 for 29 over an eight game stretch while you also pitch and play three positions including catcher.
Alls I'm saying is, there's a little guy on the Yankees you might have heard of. His name is Derek Motherfucking Jeter. Yeah. You ever heard of him? He's the best athlete in earth's history except for maybe Jim Thorpe. And there is no way -- none -- that Derek Jeter would ever go 3 for 29 (!!!!!!) over an eight game stretch. Not while he's be-pinstripèd. Not while Monument Park is still standing. Not while Scott Brosius and Tino Martinez are--
Derek Jeter, September, thus far: .266/.347/.406. (Sep. 3-Sep. 14: 5-32, one double, no HR.)
-- stop interrupting me! Not while Scott Brosius and Tino Martinez are still breathing God's beautiful Lou Gehrig-flavored air. Until Alex Rodriguez realizes that, all the money in the world can't save his soul from burning in eternal hellfire, that cowardly prick. Also, Paulie O'Neill was the balls! [fjm]
