I loved Paulie, but the right thing to do would have been to give it to Clemens after 2001. He's one guy who could have made a legitimite claim to 21, and would have avoided all of this nonsense we have now. There's no way they'll retire it anyway.

yeah, they should have nipped it in the bud. i wanted to have paul's babies when i was like 16 and all but the insistence on clinging to sentimental bullshit is maddening. ugh.

and i say that as a person highly susceptible to sentiment. the sight of the number on someone else's back might be jarring but chanting paul o'neill while the guy who took 21 is trying to do his job is beyond rude.

yes... at this point it feels like it's more self-conscious and self-promoting ("everybody look at me, I am a knowledgeable fan whose memory/fandom goes back at least 7 years and I am passionately loyal") than about any sincere outrage on Paul's behalf.
