I read a wonderful quote somewhere from a coach of his (Buck Showalter?) waaay at the beginning of his career... whoever it was, said that bernie was this skinny, extremely homesick 17 year old, and that he felt so sorry for him because he always looked like bambi coming to the creek for a drink of water with the reeds rustling behind him or something, all vulnerable and huge-eyed like that. I'm completely ruining the quote, but you get the idea.
